All You Ever Wanted to Know About Insurance

A Healthy Home Is A Happy Home

The first day of spring is officially here and you know what that means - CLEANING. While you're thinking about tidying up things around the house, we're thinking about the home's structure. By now, you've set your clocks ahead and checked the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, but it's also a good idea to give your home a checkup too.

Our friends at Safeco helped compile this list of handy tips, courtesy the Department of Housing and Urban Development, to improve your home's overall health this spring:

Interior and appliances:

  • Check the basement/crawlspace for signs of standing water or dripping
  • Pull your dryer out and clean exhaust hose and vent
  • Vacuum refrigerator/freezer coils
  • Clean exhaust fan outlets and screens
  • Check air filters and replace if needed

Roof, siding, windows:

  • Check for roof damage
  • Check attic for visible moisture or discoloration indicating a possible leak
  • Look at paint on siding and trim. If peeling, you might need new paint to protect against weather
  • Check for leaks around window and door sills

Yard and exterior:

  • Check for signs of rodents/pests
  • Clean gutters and downspouts - make sure they are draining away from house
  • Trim overhanging branches/shrubs

Winter weather can cause significant damage. That damage can result in wear and tear that homeowners can miss if you aren't looking closely. Spring provides a good opportunity to spend a little time on home maintenance so that any wear and tear doesn't turn into something more serious.
